Green Tea - Gourmet Green Tea Set

Sanuki No Sato (5/5)
Definitely our favorite Udon & Soba restaurant. So I figure it does deserve just a bit longer review, guys… According to some of the many faithful followers, this is probably “the best Udon & Soba joint in the world” (including when compared to those in Japan…) which to me sounds slightly on the exagerated side. But there is certainly a reason why people really like the taste. First of all, it is an ORIGINAL Japanese restaurant (Japanese-owned, and all the personnel got the right accent, too) :). Also, they strictly follow the rules of taste, it is kept really close to what you would get in Japan- not trying to personalize (American-ize?) anything to be more suitable for a “Caucasian audience” (something that most Korean-owned restaurants tend to do, with more-than-commercial ambitions behind it). To my Korean readers: of course there is NOTHING wrong with a Japanese restaurant owned and operated by Koreans in Little Tokyo… But no matter how much they try to make it feel Japanese, taste Japanese… to those of us who know, it still remains a representation, not the REAL thing. Imagine if you got a bunch of Caucasian surfer boys open a Korean BBQ joint in K-town? Doesn’t matter if they have the best ingredients purchased from the Korean Market, best sauces… Most likely there will be no Korean customers whatsoever, since it is not original Korean. :) Anyway, back to Sanuki now. You are welcomed by a friendly hostess & a wall full of pictures of (apparently) famous Japanese stars (actors, baseball players, singers, business people etc.) that smile and shake hands with the owner. Depending on how busy Sanuki no Sato gets, some evenings you may have an opportunity to spend a quality time with those pictures while sitting on a bench and waiting to be seated… But most of the time it is not that bad. You get seated in a square-proportioned hall with high ceilings and wood posts, with some sliding Shoji-doors that separate small Tatami-rooms for larger parties. Reservation recommended for shin-nen-kai, bo-nen-kai etc. Seating is comfortable, the restaurant is amazingly clean. Service is fast and corteous… most of the time, except if they are extremely busy- then you got to assert yourself a bit. Some of the signature items on their menu are: cold Natto Udon (amazingly yummy), Nabe-Yaki Udon (hot stone-ware pot with Udon noodles), and so many other kinds of Udon and Soba. In addition, they carry great fresh appetizers such as surprisingly good Sashimi platter, Cold Tofu (Hiya-Yakko), Ikura-oroshi side, Ankimo (monk-fish liver), Mentai-ko (marinated spicy pollock roe), Nasu (Japanese eggplant), Tempura, etc. etc. You can finish the complete and delicious meal either with the usual ice-cream (azuki/red bean, or ocha/green tea) or, the amazing Shiratama Zenzai- I highly recommend the Shiratama! it is very tender, poetical, subtle. Like the first Sakura (Cherry) blossoms in Spring. And a lot healthier than the ice-cream. Last but not least, the drinks… the Sake list is great. This is a bit of a Kappo or Izakaya style place, after all. They have good quality hot sake, not the sharp and harsh cheap one, and “nama-biiru” or Japanese beer on tap- which is pretty good with many of the dishes. By the way, price-wise… really depends on your taste, appetite and budget. You can eat there for $ 10 per person, or $ 60 per person easily. So watch out. :) Enjoy!!!!!

By AIMEE GREEN, Lincoln Journal Star | Comments (0) Stealth games aren’t really my cup of tea. I generally prefer to just run and gun. But ”Hitman: Blood Money” is a stealth game with a twist.
